"I do know," Lee replied with a kind smile and a nod. "I was just... Borrowing your joke," he explained, then took a sip of his beer, setting it down on the counter as he grabbed the box of chocolates and pulled off the cellophane.
"Okay, I'll have the first one," Lee agreed as he lifted the lid on the box. "But you can feel free to have some too, if you decide you want any," he went on, taking a chocolate out and looking at it.
They were beautifully made, the shell perfectly smooth with little icing flowers on the top. The one Lee had selected was adorned with little orange flowers, and Lee hoped that meant the filling was orange flavored as well. He smiled at Susan and took a bite, finding it didn't taste like orange, but wasn't bad either. He licked his lips. "These are wonderful," he told her, his eyes meeting hers as he put the rest of the chocolate in his mouth and chewed thoughtfully.
He was still smiling as he swallowed, but a moment later he started to feel a little strange, kind of shaky, his face flushing and then going cold like he was about to faint. He took a breath and grabbed the counter with one hand to steady himself. "Susan," he said, taking another breath and then giving up trying to stand, sitting down on the floor. "I'm sorry," he managed, shaking his head softly to clear the sudden fogginess in front of his eyes. "I'm feeling a bit sick," he said, his stomach beginning to roll dangerously.
